SPS Public Safety Officers

It is the goal of SPS to employ on the highest level of Public Safety Officers in the private security industry.  All candidates for employment must not only adhere to all licensing and training requirements as outlined by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), but they must also possess, at minimum, the following training and qualifications:

 

  • A High School Diploma or a General Education Degree (GED) certificate (although a college degree and/or other technical training is highly desired) 

  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in the military, law enforcement and/or private security field, with a minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience working in the public and/or private housing sectors.

  • A valid BSIS Guard Registration License and demonstrate knowledge on California state laws involving security officer.

  • A valid BSIS Exposed Firearms License and demonstrate proficiency in the safe handling and use of firearms.

  • Certification in the use tear gas and/or pepper spray and demonstrate knowledge in the proper use and handling of chemical agents.

  • Certification in the use electro-muscular devices (Taser) and demonstrate knowledge in the proper carrying and use of the air Taser. 

  • Certification in adult and pediatric First Aid/CPR and demonstrate knowledge in standard first aid and CPR techniques. 

  • A minimum of POST Reserve Level III (PC 832) certification in arrest, search and seizure and firearms safety from a training academy approved by the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) commission. (While POST Reserve Level III is the minimum requirement for SPS Security Officers, completion of a full POST Basic Police Academy or a POST Reserve Police Academy is highly sought in all of our incoming employees)

 

In addition to the training and licensing requirements, all prospective candidates must successfully clear the following pre-employment tests and checks:

 

  • Written examination
  • Oral examination 
  • State/Federal criminal history check (no felony convictions)
  • DMV records check (no violations or accidents in the previous 3 years)
  • Prior employment reference check
  • Consumer credit check 
  • Random drug screening
